Setting the dining room

Setting
the dining room
I set the room before I cook the last things. Glasses where a hand finds them, a plate that is warm, cutlery that matches the food rather than a catalogue. If the house has good linen, I use it. If it does not, a plain cloth is better than a fussy one.
Light matters more than decoration. A lamp that lets people see the plate, and not much else competing with it. Flowers, if the host has them, stay low enough that a conversation can cross the table.
The kitchen stays out of the room. Pans, boards and the market bags do not travel with the plates. When the first course is carried in, the dining room should already feel as if dinner has begun.
